Betfred Australia, the satellite company of leading UK bookmaker Betfred, is currently making preparations to join Australia's remote sports betting market. Aside from putting up an Australia-facing and full-service Internet-based wagering facility, the bookmaker intends to extend a local mobile-only betting services. Luke Brill, Managing Director of Betfred Australia, hopes that such plans will materialize before the 2014 FIFA World Cup kicks off in mid-June.
Based on SmartCompany's report, Brill commented that there are existing underserved areas in Australia's remote sports betting landscape, particularly those pertaining to sporting events outside of the National Football League (NFL) and the National Rugby League (NRL). As it is, most operators of sports wagering facilities in “the land down under” are greatly focused on betting activities related to the nation's football and rugby competitions.
The Betfred Australia Managing Director shared additional information by stating that the thrust of the company's initial operations in Australia will focus on sports betting, and then horse racing will follow as their next agenda. Brill likewise hopes that the company's horse racing initiatives will push through before the Spring Race Carnival in October and November of this year.
Since Betfred was able to obtain licence as gambling services provider in the Northern Territory, it has already established offices in Darwin and Sydney, which are currently manned by 15 Betfred employees plus an additional five UK staff members due to arrive soon. According to Brill, the company is also anticipating the possibility of receiving approval for live-betting operations, as this will indicate that Australia's gambling industry will be seeing future growth.
